I returned from a one-day mastermind session with our advisor today.  He grew his finance company from $400 million to $10 Billion in 12 years.  He is the best in the equipment financing business. The goal was to get his opinion of our updated Executive Management Team.  He put us through the paces AND his “4 C’s Test”.  I’m happy to announce that our team passed…would yours?

His 4 C’s are:

C = Competent

Does your team have world class competency?  Are they the best in the industry? Would you be concerned if they were part of your competitor’s management team? Competent relates to everything.  Knowledge, skills, systems, processes, communication, planning and more.

C = Clarity

Does your team have 100% clarity on the vision and company culture you as the leader has created?  Clarity is more than just understanding their job description.  Do they understand, feel, believe in your vision?  When problems arise (they always do), can their clarity of “WHO THE BUSINESS IS?” lead them to the correct decision?

C = Commitment

Will they run through fire for you, put in the hours, make the tough decisions, and lead by example?  In addition, are the skilling up and getting better to keep your company ahead of the ever growing competition?

C = Caring

Do they care about helping you as the ultimate boss, and those below them reach their potential?  Caring is ridiculously important.  I’m reminded of another colleague of mine who has grown his accounts receivable factoring business from zero to very large in the last decade.  When I asked him the key to his success and growth, he said “It comes down to one word…love.”  Caring may not need to equal love, but if you treat your people like meat, they will feed your ass to the dogs eventually.

You run the show, so ask yourself, how does my executive management team stack up?  Share these 4 C’s with them and push for greatness at all times.
