One of my favorite quotes of all time is by the great Rodney Dangerfield in the movie Back to School where he tells his professor: “TELL IT TO THE BANK”.  This quote applies to many challenges we face, but particularly burnout. Nobody cares about your burnout, especially not your banker, your debt, your co-workers, your clients or lastly your competitors.  In fact, most of them will pounce on you when you are using the excuse of “I’m burnt out”.

We all get bored, tired and unmotivated, but in the real world of dog eat dog business, it does not have a place. How you deal with these feelings is very simple.  It’s a choice to be burned out or a choice to refuel, recalibrate and push through it.  The players in business realize it, make the corrections needed and push right through it.

I believe that burn out comes from when your WHY is unclear or your GOALS are not BIG enough.  When these two areas are on track, you are on purpose, and when you are on purpose, you are on a mission.  An important mission called YOUR LIFE…and to win at the game called YOUR LIFE…you need to constantly keep your WHY and your GOALS in front of you.

Here are my 4 tips on how to quickly push through burn out and get going again.

  1. Put your big boy or big girl pants on. Grow up.  Understand the everyone is busy, often overworked and stressed out.  It’s just a factor of business these days.  But it is your job and responsibility to rise to the occasion and deal with it.  The people who make the most money are the busiest…period.  If you want to make the big money, you need to learn to mature up, skill up, juggle lots of projects, and WIN.
  2. Get your WHY and your GOALS Crystal Clear. We all have a purpose on this planet. Your job is to tap into it as early in life as possible.  Spend time…hours and hours, figuring out the reason you were put on this earth. Write them down, post them everywhere, like your car, your bathroom mirror, and your workstation. Remind yourself EVERYDAY what it is.  When you feel “tired” or “burned out” these reminders will snap you back into place.  In my own life, when I feel burned out, I quick increase my goals, and within minutes, I am back in the game.
  3. Realize it is all just a game. I like to say, “when the direct deposit on the 1st and the 15th no longer matter…life begins”.  Once your bills are paid because you have built a foundation of money generation that covers them, you can really start building the life you were meant to have.  Figure out how to play game with it all.  If you just made 5 more cold calls today vs. yesterday and you did it each day for 30 days, you will be making 100 more cold calls.  If you increased your talk time on the phone each day by just 30 mins per day, you would be talking to potential or current clients for almost 3 hours more per week.  That’s 150 hours per year, and that will move your needle of net worth.
  4. Take some time off: I think you need some time off, but not as much as YOU think. If your WHY and your GOALS are in check, most people don’t need 2 weeks on the beach.  They need a relaxing three day weekend and they will be chomping at the bit to get back at it on Monday.  Take some time off to get away, relax and recharge, but you rarely need as much time as you think.

Burn out is a trap that so many people use as a reason to justify their issues, their problems and their lack of performance.  The players have realized this, made the adjustments and keep on keepin’ on.  If you can get yourself to realize it is all just a mental game…then play the game to WIN and leave the excuse of burnout on the sidelines.
