Grow Your Fleet by Attracting the Best Drivers

In the competitive transportation industry, where many feel there’s a shortage of good truck drivers, you’ve got to find a way to attract TOP TALENT if you want to take your fleet from Good to GREAT. Check out these strategies for attracting better truckers that grow your business faster.

Be The Best Fleet For Truckers

These are some of the levers you should pull on to build an attractive employment program that attracts and retains great truckers. When you have good retention of good people, it’s easier to build a great company.

1. Guaranteed Pay

In recent years, organizers of the ‘Best Fleets to Drive For’ award has seen the emergence of guaranteed pay become more prevalent among the best-performing fleets. Truckers don’t just want to have ‘gigs.’ Like anybody else, they want a stable income they can budget on – a salary. So, you should work to build a program that gives you the profit you need and the income stability they need to attract and keep better team members.

2. Work-Life Balance

Fleets will be asked by the organizers of the program how long their drivers are typically out on the road, and what a typical week looks like to their drivers. “We’re going to be drilling into that farther and asking specifically, ‘What constitutes a weekend in your fleet?” Drivers are people. They get burned out just like anyone who has to work more than 40 hours a week. Work to give your drivers a true weekend so they can have a better work-life balance.

3. Ratio of Drivers

This year, ‘Best Fleets to Drive For’ will be more focused on the ratio of drivers to dispatchers and fleet managers. Increasing the administrative team boosts the smooth operational flow of your business, making for a better company overall.

4. Trucks & Equipment

Provide better vehicles for your truckers. If you’ve got older, beaten up equipment with seats that give your truckers a back-ache, breaks down, etc. you can bet they’ll be looking for a way out fast, and you’ll be stuck with employees that have no better options.

5. Fleet Benefits

Participating fleets can also expect to be asked about how they manage pay-to-park and their natural disaster-readiness. Truckers shouldn’t have to pay for things related to the job if they are fully employed by your company.

FAQs

At Commercial Fleet Financing, our typical client has a personal credit score of 640 or higher. With credit scores below 640, additional information will be required to review and potentially approve your credit application or refer you to our FRESH START EQUIPMENT FINANCE division.

You insure your equipment against loss including property and casualty coverage, and liability. Most clients simply add their new or replacement equipment to their existing policy.

In most states, because you are financing your equipment vs. leasing it, you are responsible for the taxes. Tax rates vary by county and state.

Since most of our transactions are loans and NOT leases, you are the registered owner of the equipment and the title is sent to you after the last payment is made. If you have chosen to lease your truck, trailer or equipment, you will have a defined buyout option.

Your choice. At CFF, we will recommend various options that fit your budget and cash flow needs.  While most of our contracts are written for 36, 48, or 60 months, we can go out as long as 108 months depending upon the type of equipment.

Most of our transactions are approved with a simple one page credit application.  From time to time, we will request additional business information such as bank statements and/or tax returns.  In addition to your credit history, we like to review the buyers order of the equipment you are purchasing to make sure it has a clean title and in good working order.
